I am writing in support of the traffic calming measures on W. Wells St. between 60th and 68th Streets. I am a parent of 3 young children and we live on 61st and Wells. On our immediate block, there are 5 families with children aged between a few days old - 7 years old. We are a very tight knit neighborhood, and on any given weekend or evening, you can find children intermingling on the front lawns of our houses.
Just yesterday, as our children enjoyed a sunny Sunday afternoon, we watched a car fly by at highway speed (I would estimate 55-60 mph). We teach our children to stay out of the street and be very aware of cars. However, with cars driving at high speeds, all it would take would be one child chasing a ball into the street or a car veering off the street to avoid an accident that could lead to a catastrophic injury.
The traffic calming measures proposed by the city will bring a level of safety and peace of mind that will bring meaningful change to the residents along that stretch of Wells St. that experience particularly high speeds. Thank you for your consideration of these safety measures.
